Hospice of Jennings County Benefit Gala Dinner and Dance was held on February 9th at St. Mary’s Parish in North Vernon, Indiana.   “This year’s gala was extra special as we celebrated 10 years with our largest attendance ever. It was great to have four former Queens attend the event: Alli Biehle, 2007’s Queen, Joni Biehle, 2003’s Queen, Kate Gray, 2000’s Queen, and our first Queen from 1999, Nicole Capes Curry,” stated Kaleen Law, Patient Care Coordinator for Hospice of Jennings County.

The event featured dinner, dancing, a silent and live auction, and raised over $18,000 for the patients and families served by Hospice of Jennings County. The culmination of the evening was the crowning of 2008’s Queen, Hannah Hirtzel. Other Jennings County High School contestants included, Jessica Brunner, Kelsey Diss, Shayna Heavern, Adrienne Mayer, and Macie Mull.   Each contestant received a $50 savings bond, while the Queen received a $250 savings bond.

“All of the girls did a great job this year to raise money for our patients and families,” stated Deb Cummings, Manager of Fund Development and Marketing, “They are all outstanding young ladies who, as they graduate and pursue future endeavors, will accomplish great things."

The Jennings County High School Jazz Band provided music during the dinner, while Tom Lawson donated his skills as auctioneer for the live auction. Marcia Potts with The Right Angle Studio took pictures throughout the evening. Hospice of Jennings County, which is an office of Hospice of South Central Indiana, provides a full range of services that address the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of our terminally ill patients and their families regardless of their ability to pay. While Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance cover most services provided by our Hospice program, additional funds are needed to help offset costs not covered, and for patients without any insurance coverage. Funds to cover those additional costs are provided through memorials, donations and fundraising events like the gala.

Enchanted Evening for Shelby Spring Fling

2008 Shelby Spring Gling Queens, Abby Bolls and Juliann Lain

2008 Shelby Spring Fling Queens, Abby Bolls and Juliann Lain.

The 4th annual Hospice of Shelby County Spring Fling was not only an enchanting evening for everyone who attended, but the event also had the largest crowd to date. “We had a wonderful evening,” said Janice Huntsman, Patient Care Coordinator for Hospice of Shelby County. “This year’s group of girls were amazing -their combined efforts in money raised totaled almost $17,000! I want to thank the community for supporting the Queen contestants and the event through their sponsorships and attendance. Because of the outstanding efforts of everyone, this year’s Spring Fling raised almost $27,000 to support the patients and families served by Hospice of Shelby County. It seems like each year, our event gets bigger and better.”

The highlight of the evening was the crowning of Abby Bolls and Juliann Lain as this year’s Queens. The young ladies, who represented Southwestern High School, ran as a team, as did all of the contestants this year. Abby and Juliann’s efforts raised $9,400 including the value of the items they solicited for the silent and live auctions. This figure is the highest amount raised to date by any of the contestants. The girls fundraising efforts included a dinner, garage sale and individual contacts and solicitation letters. Casey Browder who attends Shelbyville High School was named Miss Congeniality. The remaining contestants who participated included Alaina Clark and Kayla Schmidt, who attend Morristown High School, Erica Deutsch and Amanda Smith, who attend Triton High School, Hannah Thomas and Sharon Jackson, who attend Waldron High School, and Megan Shafer, who also attends Shelbyville High School. Each contestant received a $50 savings bond, and the Queens each received a $250 savings bond.

“All of the girls did a great job this year to raise money for our patients and families,” stated Deb Cummings, Manager of Fund Development and Marketing, “They are great representatives of their schools and community and are outstanding examples for their peers.    Hospice is blessed to have had them as a part of our event and I am honored to have worked with each of them.”

The Gust Spenos Trio provided music during the social hour and dinner, while John R. Scott donated his skills as auctioneer for the live auction. Marcia Potts with The Right Angle Studio took pictures throughout the evening.
